The garden and pool at The 5 Brothers Hotel

The hotel

Built by five brothers, run like a family house

A small place on a quiet lane, made almost entirely from materials found and worked on Lombok.

Our story

Why it is called The 5 Brothers

The name is literal. Five brothers built the hotel, and the family still runs it — which is why the front desk knows what boat you came in on and remembers how you take your coffee.

The building went up slowly. The teak platforms, the driftwood headboards, the carved fish along the corridor and the lanterns either side of every bed were made by workshops on Lombok, most of them a short ride from Bangsal harbour. Nothing was shipped in flat-packed.

What that adds up to is a hotel with twelve rooms rather than fifty, a pool that stays quiet because it is adults-only, and staff who have been here long enough to tell you which warung is worth the walk.

Made here

Teak, driftwood and river stone

Every headboard is different because every piece of driftwood is. The basins are single blocks of river stone, cut and polished but left the shape they were found in.

The corridor carvings took the longest — a run of panels and hand-cut fish that took one workshop the better part of a season.

How we run it

Quiet by design

Adults only, twelve rooms, and no reason to rush. Breakfast is ordered off a menu rather than queued for. The lounge stays cool through the afternoon. Bikes are at the front if you want them, and the concierge will sort your boat out before you have finished asking.

Where we are

On the quiet side of Gili Trawangan

Jl. Anemon sits back from the harbour strip, far enough that the music doesn't reach you, close enough to walk everywhere. There are no cars on the island — you arrive by boat and get around on foot, by bike or by cidomo.
